Hunger is a problem that constantly surrounds journalists but is often invisible. People who face this problem don’t fit into well-defined categories. Some you would never expect to face hunger in their everyday lives. Hungry people come from all backgrounds, demographics and ages. Don’t let stereotypes and generalizations inhibit your reporting.
Tracy and Rebecca Smith have their own perspective on the problem of hunger. The couple manages the Annie Fisher Food Pantry in Columbia, Mo., and they also use the center’s services. Their story involves the reality of food insecurity. They opened up about how they define hunger and shared ways they think the media could improve coverage of this issue.
